The Trophy Wives is one of those underground blues bands, not yet a household name in this carnation, but keeping the live blues sounds alive across the Metroploex.

Those attending today’s Lone Star Underground w/Big Gus concert at 4 p.m. today at Love & War in Texas (Plano) will get a treat with this great band, and most will see some of their favorites at the same time.

Confusing? The Trophy Wives is made up of three of the members of Somebody’s Darling, the band that took the Shiner Rising Star title several years ago and has made KHYI proud.

Joining drummer Nate Weden and bassist Mike Talley Sunday will be Wade Cofer on lead guitar and Alexis Sanchez on vocals. Normally, David Ponder plays lead guitar with both bands, but couldn’t make Sunday’s gig, so Wade is sitting in for him. Nate said that, actually, Wade has sat in for all of them at some point, on each instrument

Nate said that the band came into being with the combination of the men’s love of straight-up, old blues, some cold beer, and the need to make some more money

The Trophy Wives band members all gew up with the blues, Nate said. It’s played several times during some months and other months they haven’t played at all, and it’s all good.

In the day of “alternative” sounds in all genres of music, this bound doesn’t claim to be “alternative blues.” Instead, their uniqueness is that they keep the real old sound, old blues, accented by Alexis’ gravelly voice.

“It’s a unique approach, a little grungier than some, we’re taking ou modern-day rock & roll sound and putting it to the old blues songs,” Nate said.

One of the first people they wanted to touch bass with after becoming a blues group wasBig Gus Samuelson, ofKHYI’sOrbit Lounge radio show, Nate said. So, they sent him a message and it resulted in Gus’s “hitting us up to play Sunday,” Nate said. The band is pumped and ready to hit the stage.

OK, the pic of Amber is just thrown in here, ’cause she’s the awesome front singer for Somebody’s Darling, and because she said she just might show up Sunday, too. Sorry, I don’t (yet) have pictures of Alexis and Wade, but check back late on. They, too, will be posted.
