Story and pix by Mary Jane Farmer, and thanks to The Point and the bands for letting me do this!

LAKE TEXOMA (The Texas Side) — It was a night, and what a night it was! The Point’s annual Pirate’s Ball was packed with pirates and their ladies, or gents as the case might have been. But even more, it was packed with music lovers there to hear four of the hottest bands in the region.

The Dustin Perkins Band led off, a great start with their energy and musicianship. And it was great to see Colton Gilbreath back with the band!

Casey Donahew recently covered one of Dustin’s songs, “Leavin’ Dallas,” which Casey renamed “I’d Give Anything,” on his newest CD, “Double Wide Dream.” More about that later.

Next up was John David Kent & The Dumb Angels, killer band with everything a killer band needs: fiddle, guitars, drums, and bass. Usually, there’s a keyboard on stage, too, but with the quickness of changeover between these four bands, JDK left that instrument in the van. Energy, musicianship, personality, this band has it all!

Johnny Cooper and his band, Joe on drums, Nick on keyboards and sometimes guitar, Cody on bass and dance movements, Ben on lead guitar, and Johnny on lead vocals, hit the stage a-runnin’ and didn’t stop for the better part of an hour and a half. Johnny combined his standards — those songs people know and want to sing along with — with many cuts off his newest CD. Always a pleasure, being around these boys!

And last, after the costume contest, was the incredible Stoney LaRue, who has been a friend and a regular at the Point for several years. OK, with Stoney being an Okie, I guess I should have datelined this without the “this side of the Red River” comment….

Anyone who has ever seen Stoney knows he’s going to give an A-1 performance. This was absolutely NO exception.

One bonus was when Tony Avezzano, part-owner (as I understand it) of The Point, got on stage with his own guitar and swapped a few licks with Stoney and the boys!

And speaking of the contest.. .here’s some pix of that and just some side shots. Enjoy
