Robby White

It was a perfect pairing of bands at Shiner Sunday (6/12/11) in Plano, with Robby White & The Tejas Gringos opening for Paul Thorn and his fantastic Tupelo-based band.

Big Gus Samuelson, KHYI personality, brought out both bands, recognizing the unique talents each one has to offer.

Robby and the guys rousted up the crowd, showcasing Mark Lafon’s guitar style, Brad King’s bass licks, and Chris Clifford’s hot licks on the drums, along with Robby’s mostly-self-penned set of songs.

Many of the fans were there because of White’s band, and others came primarily to hear Paul Thorn, in this rare appearance in North Texas.

Thorn came to Plano with a band including bass, lead guitar, drums, and keyboard, and his web site PaulThorn.com, shows him to have a fiddler at times, too. The combination Sunday was electric, even without the fiddler!

Thorn seemed a little more reserved on his first set, which is broadcast on KHYI (95.3 FM) until 6 p.m., and then, when the plugs were pulled, it all broke loose. Dancers packed the floor with partners of all ages, including some about three years old who sported possibly the biggest smiles of all on their faces.

Both sets of fans came away professed fans of both bands, and that, my friends, is what Texas music is all about!
