Bending the rules of formula-driven bands, Saille Branch never ceases amaze me. Saille and his band, Chris Wilkinson on bass, Caleb Hallowed on lead guitar, and John Breedlove on drums, make up the Big Benders.

The man is multi-musically-talented, and can switch from an obscure Hank Williams song (yes, there are some of those) to a rock, then kick into a punk song, all equal entertaining and intriguing.

And yes, it has to be said, he surrounds himself with equally-talented musicians. Smart man!

Don’t even try to place this peg in a genre hole, you might think you have a square peg and find a round hole, or you might think you’ve picked up a rectangle peg, and it won’t fit in that star hole.

At Saturday night’s (1/15/11) performance at Hank’s Texas Grill in McKinney, Saille even threw in his most recently-written song, one with a gospel feel. Saille and the boys have been in the Bent Leaf Studio in Denison, recording their CD, which, owners Bryan Bentley and Jesse Sims said, is in the mix-and-master phase now, nearing completion.

One of those songs, “Life I Chose,” is already out, and can be heard on Saille’s ReverbNation page. This high-bounce original is a keeper, and can be purchased for download for a measly 99¢ at cdbaby.com
