I asked them once just what that band name meant, and no one seemed to know. They laughed and just said they liked the sound of it. Grant Jones & The Pistol Grip Lassos. It does have a nice ring to it!c

I like the sound of this band. Grant Jones has a distinguishable and memorable upbeat to just about every song he sings. This was apparent, in fact, so much so that as I headed home from T-Bones Bar & Grill in Denison from Friday night’s GJ&PGL show, I recognized the band’s song being played on Americana radio station KHYI. Now, sometimes late at night, KHYI, like so many others, puts their music on auto-pilot and so there’s no DJ to call and ask who just sang that song. But just the uniqueness of it let me know immediately it was Grant and the guys.

The guys in this group are Grant on lead vocals and acoustic guitar, Rocky Garza on bass, David Fiegelman on drums, and Miles Penhall on lead guitar. The band’s Facebook also includes their late friend and bass player, Ace McNeely, only as R.I.P. Mr. McNeely died less than a year ago in an accident in central Texas, and his presence remains strong on the band’s various stages.

The Pistol Grip Lassos won the 2009 Shiner Rising Star contest, and that gave them their current, self-titled CD.

Grant’s got swagger, Miles has grit, David has exhuberance, and Rocky, the new kid on the block, has stability. It’s a quartet that sends its listeners home ready to return for another Pistol Grip Lasso show.
