The words “class act,” used so often they, like the word “awesome,” often fade in delivering the impact intended.

Dale Watson and his Lone Stars teamed with The Texan Theater in downtown Greenville (Texas) Friday night (Dec. 19, 2015) in what was, in the truest hard-core meaning of the words, a class act.

Barbara Horan and Lana Dollgener hosted this, and host numerous other concerts in the perfectly-remodeled theater. The ticket price includes dinner for every concert, and Friday night’s dinner started with an appetizer, followed by beautiful salad, then steak, steamed asparagus, “real” mashed potatoes, homemade yeast rolls, and topping that off was a triple-layer chocolate/peanut butter cookie/cake and coffee beyond expectations.

OK, the music — Dale Watson & The Lone Stars (consisting of doghouse bass, steel guitar, and All 1 10x8 namedrums) played a combination of Christmas songs, Watson’s originals, and a very few covers — those requested by the crowd. And interspersed in there were his stories about the songs, about his tours, about his talk with George Jones and Jones’ admiration of Watson’s “Country My Ass,” and about just about any other subject the crowd asked him about. It was that intimate a setting, where the crowd could freely talk with Watson, and where he could hear their comments and questions. Like a large house concert, with dinner served quietly by an expert wait staff.

Afterward, Watson joined the crowd in the lobby, posing for photos and talking with all those who wanted to share a few words with him, smiling all the while.

The Texan Theater line-up can be found on its Website — TexanTheaterGreenville.com — and also on, of course, SceneInTown.com’s Live Music Calendar.
