Brandon Rhyder, Scooter Brown headline the first Shiner Sunday

Brett and Brandon

March 18, 2010 — it was almost Spring, and almost Spring-like weather at Love & War in Texas. Although the Rusty Wier pavillion had been busy every Sunday through the winter, with a variety of events including the Rusty Wier Songwriting contest, the crowd that Sunday took on a new life, excitement mixed with the joy of seeing new and older friends who also love Texas Music.

It was the first Sunday of many to come through the summer at the Plano venue — Shiner Sundays. Brandon Rhyder opened up the series, although a newer Austin-based band, Scooter Brown, opened up for Brandon. Great mix of music. Scooter Brown is fresh and unaffected, one of those bands with great talent and potential, and yet appearing to be there for the love of the song.

Brandon brought his A-team performance and band — actually it’s his only band and his performance is always A-team. Watching and listening this time to him, a person could almost hear the Perry Como/Frank Sinatra croon to his pure-country tunes. If you haven’t grabbed one yet, there’s still time to get his latest CD in your hands, “Live At Billy Bob’s.” It’s a double CD and a double DVD both, and Brandon said it was all recorded without one single re-do or do-over in a studio. A true live recording.

Shiner Sundays is sponsored by Love & War in Texas, Shiner Beer, and KHYI/95.3 on the dial. Music starts every Sunday at 4 p.m.

This next Sunday, March 25, brings Gary P. Nunn & the Bunkhouse Band with Swampadelic opening. Two great bands. (P.S.:  If dubbing Brandon Rhyder the Perry Como of Texas country isn’t enough, someone dubbed Swampadelic as the Doc Severenson of country.) You can follow the line-up on the SceneInTown.com live music calendar.
