Wednesday night, down at the El Patio Escondido restaurant in beautiful downtown Van Alstyne, owners celebrated their one-year-anniversary with live music and menu specials. Kyle James Dunlap played a variety of Texas music on the corner stage, then gave the stage to the Mariachi Tequila band. Quite a variety, and it pleased the patrons. Outside, an artist quickly concocted cariacatures of those who asked for that service. Kyle James had one made with two others in his crowd.

Thursday brought the Fred Spears & Friends back to the Loose Wheels Texas stage, deep in the natural environment maintained behind the ever-expanding medical center around Pool Road and Fm 691 in Denison. Fred was backed by Jack Brown on the lead guitar and Richard Burleson on drums, and Bob Penhall on bass and Vicki Penhall on vocals. Actually, Freddie Lee and Bob swapped lead vocals with Vicki, bringing “old school” classics back to vibrance for the dancers that hit the floor on the first song.

Over at Smitty’s Bar & Grill, also in Denison, the Travis Parker Band played a special set, special in that there is seldom music at Smitty’s except on Friday and Saturday nights. It was a relaxing time, and Travis Parker and his band of tenacious talent, Marcus Rasor on drums, Willy Warren on lead guitar, and Matt Neal on bass, kept up a two-hour set of mostly original, mostly Texas-country-rock songs to a receptive audience. Not a lot of room to dance there, at least until the weather lets them move the music outdoors to the bigger stage. Outside, Smitty’s hasalready moved the fence line out to make room for some bigger events through the summer.
