The White Elephant Saloon is the perfect host and perfect sponsor its 10th year of the Texas Music Showdown… good food, good friendly service, great sound man in Ted, and all-around good people everywhere. And, after the contest this past Wednesday, there was a special surprise, short performance before Brad Hines closed out the night in his unique song style.

This year’s contest completed its third week of Round 1 Wednesday (Feb. 25) with two bands competing: The Matt Nix Band, fronted by Matt Nix, and Blood Moon Bandits, fronted by Will Hancock. The third band which had been accepted to compete had to bow out at the last minute for personal reasons. At the end of the night, the judges selected The Matt Nix Band to move into Round 2, where they will be joined by previous Round 1 winners, Josh Halverson Band and The Twisted Pistols, plus the winner of the final Round 1 night next Wednesday, March 4.

Judges for the night were Brett Dillon, KHYI on-air personality and contest organizer; and singers/songwriters Deryl Dodd and Rachel Stacy.

Blood Moon Bandits opened with a saxophone player, an electric guitarist, a drummer, and Will Hancock on acoustic guitar. They opened with Hancock’s original, very folky and almost solo song, with only slight musical arrangements behind his lyrics. The judges’ favorite of their originals was one Hancock had penned about the White Elephant during a recent tornado time. He told the tale of that experience. Their one required cover song was that of Shakey Graves’ Dearly Departed.

Matt Nix Band, a 6-piece consisting of fiddle, guitars, bass, drums, and vocals by Matt and Emily Webb. Nix writes and sings of lessons in life. One of the judges’ comments, a real compliment, was that sometimes when there are six people on a stage, they don’t

always know what each other is doing. But with this band, it was obvious they each knew exactly what their parts were and they never stepped on each other. Their cover was of the Bob McDill-penned “Louisiana Saturday Night,” and dandily emphasized the fiddle.

The special surprise? Deryl Dodd’s musical mentor and musician, Butch Giddens, drove up from Waco to spend the evening with Dodd. They both explained that Butch and his family had taken Deryl under their musical wings before he went to Nashville. Deryl has been back from Tennessee for about 11 years now, living in the Metroplex, and he and Butch have not had many chances to get together.

Firstly, Deryl and Rachel did one song together. Then, Butch got up and, together, he and Deryl sang the Merle Haggard hit, “Working Man’s Blues.” Now, no offense intended toward anyone’s voices that night — they were all good, nay, incredible —  but when Butch opened his mouth to sing, well — he showed all of them just how classic country music is done! ‘nuf said!

The final 3 bands in Round 1, to compete March 4, are The Molotov Dogs, Big Joe Walker, and Zach Seth Band. Music starts at 8 p.m., and there’s no cover charge for these Wednesdays.

Hank’s Open Mic Challenge, semi-finals

Wednesday night (Dec. 18) brought to the Hank’s Texas Grill stage a dozen or so of the finest singers and/or songwriters in the area. Each was there in hopes of gaining some career-enhancing prizes, including, for the final winner, a gig of their own on the Hank’s stage. It’s a relatively quick contest, when compared with some others, in that it only goes on for four weeks… the first two are try-outs, then (this week) the semi-finals, and lastly (Thursday, Dec. 26), the final night of the challenge.

It’s the 4th year for this competition. Previous winners were Aubrey Lynn England, Kyle Thompson, and Tanner Usrey.

Wednesday night found host Tyler Rogers and songwriter Tony Ramey opening the night with several songs of their own. Then, the challenge began. Jasper Bradshaw, Kevin Edwards, David Aguirre, Danny Zagotta, Scott Sean White, Aaron King, Crystal White, Cody Jackson, Bryan Adam Joyner, and Ray White competing as solo artists, and the trio of Rocko Campbell, Bryan Norfolk, and Tipper McNatt playing as a trio.

Now, moving on into the finals are:  David Aguirre, Jasper Bradshaw, Cody Jackson, Bryan Adam Joyner, Scott Sean White, Crystal White, and the Tipper/Rocko/Bryan trio.

Rogers said that his hope is that “everyone has made new friends and fans, and that everyone continues to pursue their passion for performing music, no matter what the outcome turns out to be.”

It starts about 8 p.m. on the post-Christmas night at Hank’s, which is at the SE corner of U.S. 75 and White Avenue in McKinney.

Thursday night (Nov. 7) brought the four finest bands that entered the 10th Annual Shiner Rising Star band competition together, on the Love & War in Texas, Plano, stage. One walked away with all prizes, and all walked away with tote bags filled with mutual respect and new fans.

The finalists were, in the order in which they played, The Bodarks, Green Light Pistol, Buffalo Ruckus, and Matt Bradshaw. Judges for this major event exceeded the usual 3-judge panels of the previous three months, and included a combination of past winners, KHYI on-air personalities, and various others in the music industry. In all, there was Chuck Taylor, Joshua Jones, Brett Dillon (all with KHYI), Darryl Lee Rush, Grant Jones, James Dunning, (past SRS winners), Tip Jones (Overdrive Entertainment), Mark Jabben (Kona Guitars), and Donnie Nelson (Mavs).

Joshua Jones had the MC honors for the night, announcing first that contest sponsor Shiner Beer was introducing its newest beer that night, White Wing, exclusively at Love & War in Texas.  He also thanked Scene In Town and DB Music for their continual participation through the season, and explained the rules to the crowd.

Then the music began.

The Bodarks, from the Frisco area, are basically a folk-Americana string band of four musicians, Shelly Duell on fiddle and vocals; Brian Kelleher on doghouse bass; Jason Bell on mandolin, washboard percussions, and vocals; and Jeff Brooks on guitar and banjo and vocals. The energy and enthusiasm typical of hootenannies compliments their choices of songs.  Comments from the judges included such things as, “You create your own genre,” and “loved the kazoo and stripped-down sound,” and “the modulation was awesome.”

Next up was Green Light Pistols, and it might be said here that this is the band that went home with the recording contract from Shiner Records and who will receive new instruments from Kona Guitars.

The Bodarks

A band of siblings, with their dad also standing in this night on horn, the Green Light Pistols also are basically a string band. There’s Caleb Wallace on doghouse bass; Bethany Wallace on vocals and keyboards; Sally Wallace on vocals and mandolin; Brook Wallace on vocals and fiddle; Madalyn Wallace on vocals and percussions; and Chad Fincher on guitar and kick drum. Chad, by the way, is soon to be a part of the family, too, being engaged to one of the sisters.

Comments from the judges following their sets included: “One word—Wow,” “Creativity off the hook, not canned or thrown out there.” “Great stage presence,” and much more of the same, plus a few attaboys on their vocals and harmonies.

Buffalo Ruckus is made up of Jason Lovell on vocals and guitar; Brad Haefner on guitar, mandolin, and vocals; Mike Burgess on bass and vocals; and Christian Dorn on drums. This band has only been together for about six months — they’re even losing exact count, but know it’s somewhere in that neighborhood. A highlight for one spectator, Frances, who had spent much of her night dancing along to every band, was when Burgess went out into the audience and played a little bass just for her.

Matt Bradshaw

Matt Bradshaw

Joshua Jones commented on the band, very complimentarily, and then added that he was impressed with the group’s use of social media, especially Twitter. He later added that The Bodarks had been doing the same thing throughout the night, which is something Jones emphasized for all bands to do right from the get-go orientation meeting. Comments on this band included “tribal and organic,” and great songwriting,” and “blown away.”

Matt Bradshaw went through the entire contest solo, an feat never before accomplished in Shiner Rising Star history, and he blew the crowd away with his command of the stage. Comments that followed included, “Some fellows don’t need bands,” “best songwriter I’ve seen here,” and “I could drink Shiner and listen to you all night.”

All through this competition, with maybe one or two exceptions, the bands (and the solo Bradshaw) have been the most “let’s win” of any of these competitions. Even Bradshaw, who came the farthest, was an immediate friend with the others there Thursday night. During the two weeks prior to the final meeting of the bands, they had been using Facebook and Twitter in a friendly battle of the wits, enjoying and entertaining each other with their creativity.

Jones said, when calling out the winners in order, that the total judges’ scores added up to be very tight, very close to one another.

Shiner Rising Star, coordinated through KHYI, 95.3, will begin seeking entries in May 2014 for the 11th season, with the first round beginning in late July, if all goes to usual schedule.

Meanwhile, Green Light Pistol will have a spot at the March 2014 Texas Music Revolution.

The round's

Judges Mark Jabben, Rodney Parker, Chuck Taylor

It’s all over now but the Shiner Rising Star finals. And Thursday night’s final showdown of Round 2 was definitely a challenge between the Lauren Alexander Band and Buffalo Ruckus.

The night’s judges, KHYI’s Chuck Taylor, Kona Guitar’s Product Specialist Mark W. Jabben, and singer/songwriter/musician Rodney Parker chose Buffalo Ruckus as the band to go into Round 3, aka the finals.

The Lauren Alexander Band, however, made the Buffalo boys run for their money.

She and her band, made up of Richie Kindle on lead guitar, Chris Pitts on bass, and Jeff Odom on drums, presented a good blend of rock and country and dashed it up with a bit of the bluesy feel. Her on-stage charm adds to her performances as she kisses the mic with every word she sings, and smiles most of the time while doing it.

The judges critique each band after their sets. Jabben said simply, “You are good.” Parker complemented the rhythm section as he pointed to the bass player, “you are monsters.” That’s good, by the way. Taylor remembered Lauren from two seasons ago, when it was the ultimate winning band, Blackbird Sing, that knocked her out of her round then.  “You’ve grown since then. I like that you didn’t take a lot of time to go through the sound check. If anything, the show was a little bit too lethargic, but otherwise you did a good job.”

Buffalo Ruckus

Buffalo Ruckus

Buffalo Ruckus,  a 4-piece band with Michael Burgess on bass, Brad Haefner on guitar and mandolin, Christian Dorn on drums, and Jason Lovell on vocals and acoustic guitar… well, as KHYI said it in a post:  “Self-proclaimed ‘dirty ol’ broken down roots’ band, Buffalo Ruckus, brought the herd out to Tolbert’s in Grapevine last night, and put on a great show for all of us! They plugged Shiner all night long, and covered Ain’t No Sunshine (Bill Withers) and Whipping Post (the Allman Bros).’

The band had only been together a few weeks when they won their first round. Lovell has been at all but two rounds since then, making friends along the way. He also remembered to thank the sponsors, Shiner Records, Shiner BeerKona Guitars, and support crews of Scene In Town and DB Sound, which has provided the backline and often the sound each week of the contest.

Critique began again with Jabben, commenting on the band’s “good and full sound.” Parker said the set was “cool and original. Your (Lovell) voice was honest and believable, and all the players did really well.” And Taylor summed it up saying, “For a band together only three months, you are really tight. It’s going to be one helluva finals on Nov. 7.”

The contest takes the night off the Thursday (Halloween, Oct. 31), and the finals will be back at the original site, Love & War in Texas, Plano, on Thursday, Nov. 7.  No cover charge for this or for any of the past weeks’ contests.

The four bands competing for a recording contract through Shiner Records, new instruments from Kona Guitars, and a few other career-enhancing prizes are:  Buffalo Ruckus, Green Light Pistol, Matt Bradshaw, and The Bodarks.

Again, my notes with all the incredible words that judges Matt Caldwell, Chuck Taylor, and Dawn Partin said about both bands has been lost in my shuffle of daily living. My bad!n This was at Love & War in Texas, the Grapevine venue.
