Southern Junction Dancehall and Steakhouse  hosted this week’s Shiner Rising Star, its regular band stepping to the side for Whiskey Prophets, Aaron McDonnell band, and Levi Cobb & The Big Smoke to take the large stage. Each of the three bands were competing for the chance to move into Round 2 of this year’s Shiner Rising Star, the contest sponsored by Dallas station KHYI 95.3 and Shiner Beer. It will be Whiskey Prophets who will moving into Round 2.

Whiskey Prophets is made up of Brad Robertson on vocals, Mike Norris on drums, Matt Hinchey on guitar, and Jeremy Ailes on bass, and most of them backing up Brad on vocals. They, as required, entertained with all original songs, except for the one required

cover song, which in this case was Chris Knight’s Highway Junkie. At the end of the set, as set out in the contest regulations, the three judges — Allan Peck and Big Gus Samuelson of KHYI, and Woody Lee, singer/songwriter — critiqued this and the other two bands.

Critique:  The judges said, individually, that the band’s having kept the tempo of their songs upbeat was a plus, and kept dancers on the dance floor; they had a good transition from one song to the next; their choice of cover song was good and well executed;  and they appeared professional in their stage presence.

and tambourine; Dave Stammer on bass; Dennis Bailey on pedal steel; Leland Rooney on lead guitar; and Kyle Williams on drums. On the positive side, after determining that the bad were, in the judges’  words “hired guns,” the judges compared Aaron to a cross between Kenny Rogers and James Hand, with some Tom Russell thrown in. Aaron, who acknowledge he wasn’t familiar with Tom Russell, provided the judges with lyric sheets, which the judges said they appreciated.

Critique:  The judges seemed in agreement again that the band’s inspirational song was definitely in the Tom Russell style;  their stage presentation between songs was a definite plus, showing that they loved their audience. Big Gus remembered that Aaron has a rather famous uncle, Cletus T. Judd.

Levi Cobb & The Big Smoke is a more folky-type band than the first two who played and brought country music to the stage. It is made up of Jesse Thompson on lead vocals, banjo, and guitar; Kim Nall on vocals and guitar; Dave Stone on vocals and bass; and Charlie Moore on drums. They presented a waltz, a slow song, their cover, and other originals of varying tempos and subjects.

Critique:  The judges suggested they take more time to announce their songs; noted that they didn’t correct their guitars when out of tune; and turned their backs to the audience between songs, thereby losing contact with that audience; and noted little interaction between the band members.

This next Thursday, Aug. 28, the contest will be at Love & War in Texas, Grapevine, and will be between Crazywater, Andrew Delaney & The Horse You Rode In On, and Matt Begley & Bitter Whiskey. Music starts at 8 p.m., and there’s never a cover charge for these contests.

Matt Caldwell and Jamie Richards —keeping ’em on the dance floor

The Southern Junction Steakhouse and Dancehall in between Royse City and Rockwall is tailor-made for the dancer in all of us. Thursday nights are special: (1) All-you-can-eat ribs; (2) Free dance lessons; (3) Specially-lower-priced drinks; (4) Incredible house bands, actually every Wednesday through Saturday. And if that weren’t enough, Thursday nights also have brought second dance bands to the stage, all part of the Sounds of Summer series hosted by Big Gus Samuelson.

These past two weeks were outstanding. On July 10, Matt Caldwell and his band played their own hits along with numerous cover tunes, all good for those new dances the patrons learned earlier in the evenings. Caldwell remarked how pleased he was to be playing back at SoJo (Southern Junction), as he did years ago when he  traveled there from his native Nevada (Texas), long before he packed up his family  and guitars and moved to Nashville, where he signed as a songwriter. He’s also been featured on the syndicated television series, “Troubadour TX.”

Then, on July 17, it was Jamie Richards who brought his very-country band to this very-country venue. Richards’ “I’ll Have Another,” is currently on both the Texas Regional Radio chart. Richards, too, worked in Nashville for a while; but returned to his native Oklahoma and has taken his brand of true-Texas/country across the southwest for some time.

True talent like these two musicians and their bands is rare. However, it might be matched this Thursday (7/24) when Texan Jeff Allen and his band take the SoJo stage. And those ribs and free lessons will also be there, as will the Marcus Lindsay Band.

Charlie Montague/ Johnny Chops

Charlie Montague

Two bands we might never have seen up here in the Metroplex performed great sets at Southern Junction Steakhouse & Dancehall in Rockwall Thursday night (June 26/2104).

Charlie Montague’s Band was high energy, country mixed with rock. Horns, drums, bass, and lead guitar brought it all to the stage.

Johnny Chops, who regularly plays with Randy Rogers Band, made it a little less rock but lots of Texas country with his four other musicians, The Razors — keyboard, bass, guitar, and drums.

And I have to add this — a nicer group of musicians you won’t find anywhere. Maybe as nice — yes. But nicer — never.

In this Sounds of Summer series, coordinated by Big Gus Samuelson for Southern Junction, there is normally only one band brought to play following the venue’s various house bands. These two bands traveled together from the Texas Hill Country, thus the double treat.

Jerrod Medulla and his band brought great sounds to the Southern Junction stage Thursday night (June 19), following a greats from Marcus Lindsey Band and dance lessons for anyone who wanted them. Lots of fun.

This Sounds of Summer music series goes on through July, every Thursday, thanks to Charles Houk and Gus Samuelson. This upcoming Thursday (June 26) brings a huge combination of music styles, with the Charlie Montague Band providing dance music until about1 11 p.m., then Johnny Chops & The Razors with guest fiddler Brady Black closing the night out. Be there… don’t miss a beat.

Prophets & Outlaws

This young band closed out the live music Thursday night (June 12) at Southern Junction, the second in a summer concert series interspersed with Southern Junction’s regular Thursday night activities which include music from its house band (in this case it was Rob Dixon band, including some songs sung by his daughter), and dance lessons that included several styles of line dances and schottisches.

Prophets & Outlaws presented a full set of original and cover music. They have recently released a CD, and — for my friends down in the Hill Country — will be sharing the bill with Robert Earl Keen at July 4, at the Kerrville Fireworks and 4th of July activities on the Guadalupe River.

Prophets & Outlaws are: Matt Boggs – Vocals/Guitar; Stevie G – Lead Guitar/Vocals; James Guckenheimer – Drums/Vocals; Jamie Ringholm – Keys/Organ/Vocals; and Todd Birdwell on Bass, with Matt Page also a team member as the band’s tour manager. Their Website is www.prophetsandoutlaws.com and their Facebook page is of the same name.

Next Thursday, the summer concert series continues with Jerrod Medulla and his band taking the Southern Junction stage, later in the evening.
