Craig Wayne Boyd, David Adam Byrnes pack SoJo

There’s a young singer out on the road with past (and most successful) The Voice winner, Craig Wayne Boyd. There’s more than the simple truth that both performers sports three names, both, and much more importantly, are great talents — the kind who will be around for years and years to come.

David Adam Byrnes graced the Southern Junction (Royse City/Rockwall) stage in a solo concert prior to Craig Wayne Boyd’s taking it with full band (April 8, 2016). It was a sell-out crowd. It was an enthusiastic crowd. It was a crowd that sang along to many, most, and in some cases — all — of the songs.

Craig Wayne Boyd had been in Nashville (making his way there from his hometown of Mesquite, Texas) for quite a long time, since the mid-2000; with some minor success (but that’s till ‘success’) when he joined The Voice’s Season 7 and came out the Top Winner that season. Since then, he’s obtained good management, is touring nationwide, had a song hit high numbers on the Billboard Chart , and played the Grand Ol’ Opry — and now he’s played SoJo.David Adam Byrnes 1

Boyd, through it all, has retained his good ol’ Texas boy genuine friendliness — after all, Texas is known as The Friendship State, named from the Caddo Indian word “teyshas” or “tejas,” meaning friends. And the motto, “Drive Friendly, The Texas Way,” has greeted travelers since the 1960s. He signed guitars to be used for fundraising, he had his photo made in unofficial “meet-and-greet” style before his set and made his way to his merch table afterward, where he stayed until the last fan had said his say and has his photo made with the musician.

Byrnes, from Arkansas, was just as friendly, holding his own with his many fans there as Me and David and ladywell. Witness this photo bomb… That happened just moments before a table of fans called him over for hugs. He, too, left his hometown for Nashville a while back. It’s not clear just how he and Boyd teamed up for road trips, but team up they did, and the mix is working wonderfully.

Watch Southern Junction (SoJo)‘s Website for a list of their upcoming special guests, or just enjoy the venue’s regular house bands, which are all completely dynamite. And there’s dance lessons there, and great steaks, and sometimes other good times, such as this Sunday’s (April 24) Crawfish Boil, Car Show, and music and kids activities… well, it’s gonna be fun! Jamie Richards at Southern Junction

George Jones asks “Who’s Gonna Fill Their Shoes?” — Jamie Richards is one who is already filling them, as are Dale Watson, Cody Johnson, and so many other Texas artists But then, that’s my editorial for the day. Thanks for listening. — Mary Jane Farmer

SoJo, the greatest steakhouse combined with dancehall in the world (to put it modestly), hosted Jamie Richards and band Saturday night, Aug. 8, and this smooth country balladeer kept the audience up on their feet through the set. And, he brought Matthew Middleton back onto the stage — Middleton fronts the house band Texas Drive — to see a couple of songs with him, and also had Frank (Clancy) Prigmore and his harmonica up for a special song.

Jamie has a rich, slightly grainy, and clear voice perfectly suited for his choice of genres, country music Or did country music choose him?… hhhmmm, good question. He has surrounded himself with five great musicians on lead guitar, bass, and drums, steel guitar and fiddle. And they work as a respectful, admiring team. Not a prima donna in the group.

Next up as a special guest at Southern Junction between Rockwall and Royse City will be Cory Morrow on Saturday, Aug. 22. Plus house bands every Wednesday-Saturday nights. You can check their full line-up on the Website, SouthernJunctionLive.com.

Big Gus Catfish Tournament — “Take them kids fishin'”

Charles Houk

Big Gus Samuelson (of the bands Swampadelic and Sinner Man) and Charles Houk (of Southern Junction Nightclub & Steakhouse), and the Bare Knuckle Babes brought together the second Swampadelic Catfish Tournament, held Saturday, June 27, at the incredible SoJo. This year, the receiving beneficiary of income-over-expenses money was the Collin County Children’s Advocacy Center.

Providing music were: (outdoors in the afternoon) Beaumont; and (indoors in the evening) Jeff Hopson & The Heretics, Jerrod Medulla band, and the Jeff Allen band. (Sorry, but after a day of it, this ol’ crip had to leave before the last two bands came on stage.)

Everything was outside in the parking lot, except bathroom and meals before the catfish fry dinner, were inside SoJo. Crafts booths, a great bounce house with a slide attached, custom-built motorcycles, and numerous other fun stuff there for everybody, all while Beaumont played between catfish weigh-ins. (The members of Beaumont had to be the best sports of all — graciously stopping and starting as often as they did) Then, at 7 p.m., before the SoJo dancers had finished their great dinners, Jeff Hopson and his friends, aka band, kicked the music off inside.

Crowd 3 bounce houseThere were two divisions: youth and adult. Prizes were given for the top-weighing catfish caught “by any legal means.” After the 6 p.m., cut-off for weigh-ins, Gus handed out some super-sized checks to the winners. The first-place fish weighed more than 62 pounds — think about it, that’s more than three 10-pound bowling balls and a little bit less than the weight I’ve lost in the past three years! I’m not carrying those bowling balls around any more!)

Charles, his ace-in-the-hole SoJo sidekick Elizabeth, Gus, Tracy, Jacob, and scads more volunteers made it all into an incredible day.

And, while still applying sun-rescue cream, everyone is already planning the 2016 catfish tournament. We’ll let you know when, it’s for sure the ‘where’ will again be Southern Junction in between Royse City and Rockwall.

New Year’s Eve at Southern Junction Steakhouse & Dancehall in Rockwall delivered all the fun of the holiday with great music, great service and, as always, great food. And the night ushered in a promise of more greatness in 2015.

The Casey Donahew Band followed Big Gus & Swampadelic, and both had dancers on the floor all night. Others in the packed out (every table and every chair had been reserved ahead of time) had traditional noise-makers for the big moment. Staff handed out champagne glasses and champagne to everyone, and Casey Donahew led the midnight toast, just before the balloons dropped from their overhead cocoons. High fives, hugs, and kisses filled those few minutes from midnight on, and then the dancers picked up the beat. The whole band 2 color 10x8 name

Check the S.I.T. Live Music Calendar and/or the Southern Junction calendar to keep in the loop about SoJo’s special concerts and house bands that keep it all moving between the touring acts.

But, to help plan ahead, here’s a few on the horizon: Feb. 7 — JB & The Moonshine Band; March 24 — Chris Knight; March 28 — Deryl Dodd; and May 11 — the Bellamy Brothers. And don’t forget, free dance lessons every Thursday night.
