El Patio Escondido takes Best of Van Alstyne Restaurant

The whole El Patio Escondido staff enjoyed the patrons’ singing along with Big Joe Walker (seated in the center) to “Happy Anniversary To You” recently when they celebrated seven years of being in Van Alstyne. Shown, left to right, are Priscilla, Maria, Aurora, William, Sam, Big Joe, Jonathan, Priscilla, Juan, and Maria. Patrons stood in appreciation of the staff and everything that makes El Patio Escondido the Best of Texoma’s Best Restaurant in Van Alstyne.

Just a week after El Patio Escondido Mexican Restaurant celebrated its 7th anniversary of serving Van Alstyne it’s unique Tex-Mex food, its patrons voted it in as the Best of Texoma’s Best Restaurant in Van Alstyne. And owner William Pacheco and his staff are not only thrilled with the honor, but also very aware that it’s their patrons that made this happen.

Pacheco, with his mother, Aurora Lopez, and brother, Juan Pacheco, are the hands-on backbone of this restaurant on West Van Alstyne Parkway, but also have a loyal staff that are just as hard-working and enthusiastic. And, William said just this week when one staff member had to leave suddenly and another immediately jumped in to do her work, “We all do that. We do whatever work needs to be done.”

El Patio Escondido actually began 45 years ago in Dallas, then, too, as a family business. Then, Dallas development forced them to find a new location. William said they moved to Honey Grove for a short while, then to Celina, “in hopes of growing there.” That didn’t work out well, and again, they started looking to relocate. William had a cousin who was leasing the building which is now El Patio Escondido, but not using it. William asked him about using the building. The answer was yes, and the move-in began. And it’s been all uphill since then.

Some of their Dallas customers come up to Van Alstyne, William said, and many of those always order the same items from the menu. And many of their loyal Van Alstyne patrons also have identified their favorite choices, others order something different each time they come in.

Pacheco said, “No matter where we have gone, they seem to find us. We are still here, and we will be here for them, all.”

That also translates into memories, as well. “We have so many memories, it’s a tie between just how many memories are theirs and how many are ours. We’ve had so many celebrations, some good, some unpleasant, but we are all tied together.

“We have made and served special food to babies, to pregnant women on their way to the hospital. So many couples dated here, have married, and continued to come to El Patio now with their kids. We’ve even served some last meals, not always knowing it would be so.”

One of those families that keeps coming back is Dr. Caleb Braddock’s. The reason? “When you live in Texas, you are pretty picky when it comes to Mexican food.  El Patio is my family’s go-to for Mexican because it’s always delicious and authentic and the people are great!  We have 4 kids and the staff is always excellent with them and takes great care of us,” Dr. Braddock said.

El Patio Escondido is unique, too, in the area in that it brings in live music on Monday and Saturday nights, with no cover charge. Music-loving patron Nancy Mathews smiled, while eating a sopapilla, when she said, “The music on Monday nights is always the best. I told Priscilla (wait staff) that I don’t drink tequila and asked if they had any whiskey, she said they do. She made me a special drink that mixes whiskey with pineapple juice, and that’s become my standard drink. And the food, the staff, are just great here.”

The restaurant celebrated its 7th anniversary the Saturday night prior to the Best of Texoma gala, with Big Joe Walker playing music and with every patron, or at least every one who picked up the tab at their table, receiving a $7 credit toward their next visit. And this Saturday night will be a Cinco de Mayo celebration, with the Hunter-Brown duo bringing the tunes.

Some prefer to come on the nights when there isn’t live music, and Wednesdays, when there are enchilada specials, are always popular, as are Taco and Tequila Tuesdays.

Pacheco said, “Our appreciation is tied back to the customers. I’ve never said our food is good. I’ve always let our customers say that for us. There’s enough customers out there that feel our food is good and worth coming back for.”

El Patio Escondido is open Monday-Saturday, with the kitchen open until 9 p.m. Call-in orders can be made at 903-482-5588.

A Saturday night in Van Alstyne

How many towns this small, about 3,400 living souls, and a few questionable ones as well, can brag about having five venues that bring in live music on a regular basis? Well, welcome to the way-North Texas town of Van Alstyne. Now, they don’t all have music on the same nights, as a rule. For instance, the American Legion, Cooley Bay Winery, and the Senior Center only bring it in once a month, while the Cowboy Club hosts live music both Fridays and Saturdays every other weekend, and El Patio Escondido has the best in musicians most every Monday and Saturday, taking off only for holidays such as Christmas, Easter, and such.

This past Saturday, September 8 (2018), four of the five gave it their all, and had great crowds show up.

Cooley Bay Winery — Second Saturday is this new business’ usual time for music, and brought in Alex Cantrell and his sidekick, Will. In September the venue will also be celebrating its 1 year anniversary, and will have music, specifically the Bent Creek Trio, for a second music concert on September 23.

Senior Center — This monthly event is usually, also, on the second Saturday of the month, attended by seniors of the married, the dating, and the single persuasions. It was the Braeden Paul bluegrass band that kept dancers on the floor for a couple of hours.

El Patio Escondido had Hunter-Brown, a dynamo of a duo, on its make-shift stage, and Tom Hunter and Harley Dale Brown kept up the oldies and goodies with their own special twist of guitar, bass, and harmonica. This duo will become a trio for Fall der All, specifically the Hunter Brown Perkins trio, watch for them — that’ll be October 13, also right here in Van Alstyne.

And over at the Cowboy Club, a great mom-and-son run classic honky tonk of a bar, it was Jeff Hopson at the mic, wailing out tune after country tune to the pleasure of that crowd.

The American Legion didn’t have their monthly gig this Saturday, instead it’ll be next week, Saturday, Sept. 15, when Brent Frailicks and his mighty band of brothers will entertain. I know you remember Brent from his time in the Janie Fricke band, a decade or so ago. She still speaks highly of him.

Getting all five venues to line up their Saturday gigs happens about as often as a blue moon comes around, but it does happen! And along with the Chamber of Commerce’s monthly (Tuesdays) Music in the Parks, and all the music coming up October 13 at the city’s fall festival, aka Fall der All, well, this little town is rapidly gaining a good reputation for music lovers. And that’s something to be mighty proud of!

Imagine, for a moment, a bluegrass band playing at a Mexican food cafe. When the band is Bitter Creek Road and the cafe is El Patio Escondido, it seems to work just fine. After all, both are traditional.

Bitter Creek Road is a bluegrass-country based trio, made up of Larry and Jerry Shoemaker of Collinsville, and Tom Mundheim of Red River, N.M., who winters in the North Texas area. Banjo, dobro, bass, guitar, two voices, lots of smiles and fun. They have played El Patio Escondido twice now, in November and again in January. And kept the crowd enthralled both times. El Patio owner William Pacheco was especially excited when their special guest, who looked and sounded kind of like a country singer whose initials are W.N., showed up both times. And at the January show, another guest was the guitar picker from the bluegrass group Copper Canyon.

Bitter Creek Road is an off-shoot of Grass Notes, which is also made up of Larry and Jerry, plus their daughter, son-in-law, granddaughter, and a family-by-friendship fiddler player. Grass Notes will be playing this coming Saturday night, Jan. Feb. 7, at The Crystal Opry House in Tom Bean. A 7 p.m., show, donations made at the door. That’s at 1977 White Mound Road, Tom Bean.

But, if your music choice is singer/songwriter in a sort of house-concert-over-dinner atmosphere, the great Randall Gartman will be at El Patio Escondido, from 7:30-9:30 p.m. Lots of good choices to make.

One short week of music and pix

Fritz Schultz

Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday nights, the week before Christmas, was filled with lots of great music and great friends. Here’s three of those events, in a tiny little nutshell.

Tuesday, Dec. 16, El Patio Escondido in Van Alstyne hosted Fritz Schultz in a two-hour acoustic set; during which time Ray White sat in for a few songs, too. Lots of kids out that night, and Fritz sang “Here Comes Santa Claus” twice to the kids, evoking huge smiles. It’s nice to hear a musician/singer/songwriter who plays to his crowd and whose songs are always good for any crowd. That’s Fritz Schultz for you! El Patio has live music every Tuesday (6:30-8:30 p.m.) and Saturday (7:30-9:30 p.m.), except for those times that the owner, William, closes and gives everyone the holidays off to be with their families.

Wednesday, Dec. 17, Nolan’s “Whachamacallit” Bar & Grill in Richardson, has open mics, actually Ed McGory hosts open mics there every Wednesday, beginning around 7:30 p.m.-ish. The sound system is great — Ed provides al that — and nice friendly wait staff has as much fun with the music as do the patrons. This week, “Lonesome” Jim Littleton opened it up, and next were Brad Haefner and Jason Lovell (of Buffalo Ruckus), followed by Meia Borden. (Sorry, got no usable pix of Meia!)

Thursday, Dec. 18, Hank’s Texas Grill hosted The Chase Sanford Band in their last show of 2014. Opening was Trever Carico, who presented a great solo, acoustic set of his songs. Chase on vocals, guitar and harmonica; Sevans Henderson on keyboards, Garry Moore on lead guitar and vocals; Jason (Fuzzy) Smith on bass and back-up vocals; and Corbett Potter on drums — together, they presented some of their crowd-favorites and a couple off their upcoming EP, to be titled The One You Wantbeing released in late January.

An old friend of Chase’s, Sherilyn Marie, wrote, “It’s been close to 4 years since I got to see my friend Chase Sanford’s band play. A lot of changes have been made to that rag-tag group of back road, beer drinking hooligans that frequented the local dive bar I DJ’d at in the sticks and graciously agreed to play at one of my charity gigs. (You know me….bleeding damn heart.) I gotta tell ya…I dig the changes.

“Typically, I extol the virtues of a good pair of rocker/cowboy jeans and a purty face, but let’s take a minute to talk about the new

sound (to me it’s new…shut up.) While The Chase Sanford Band still has that gritty, southern rock-influenced sound, the blues element is stronger and their sound is cleaner. Whoever’s idea it was to cover Bill Wither’s “Aint no Sunshine” is a genius – they need to keep him around. The addition of keyboard player (that seriously should be carded – he looks like he might be a child prodigy) gives their songs a lot of depth – even if some of them ARE about Fannin County! Chase still has that “devil may care” stage presence, but the smiling good-natured “Ryan Seacrest looking mother f**#3r” (not my words! HA!) balances out that feeling that this ride might end up in handcuffs with enough shots of whiskey!

“I’m super proud of Chase! He’s worked hard and his little Red Dirt Dream Team is going places! You guys should seriously take the opportunity to see them play if you get the chance! Whether or not you are a fan of country music I’m certain that you will find something to love about them! Even if it’s that they all seem pretty adept at picking out damn fine jeans!
