Van Alstyne Fire Chief Ryan Dockery reported that since the first of January, and in addition to their multiple ambulance runs, the firefighter/paramedic crew extinguished seven grass/brush fires, and assisted Howe F.D. on a structure fire on January 21. Both departments working together were able to extinguish the fire quickly and prevent major damage. Dockery said the Grayson County Fire Marshal investigated (cause of) the fire.

Van Alstyne Police Sgt. Steven Hayslip reported that between Jan. 17-23, officers handled 201 calls for service, resulting in 13 police reports, nine offense reports and five arrests. There were also four motor vehicle crashes during those days, two of them with minor injuries.

Arrest — On Jan. 19, about 2:30 a.m., officers stopped a vehicle on U.S. Highway 75 at FM 121 (Van Alstyne Parkway. There were two Richardson men inside the vehicle and police found there was an outstanding warrant for the passenger. The warrant was issued by Dallas County and charged him with falsifying his identity by providing untrue information. Hayslip said the officer took the passenger to jail on the warrant.

There, they discovered the suspect was in possession of a controlled substance, marijuana, and charged him with prohibited substance in a correctional facility. Bail set on the warrant was $2,000 cash bond on the Dallas warrant and $5,000 on the marijuana charge. He posted those was released the next day.

Arrest  — About 1 a.m. Jan. 22, police observed a northbound U.S. 75 vehicle being driven unsteadily and got behind it, then saw that the driver couldn’t maintain a single lane and made a traffic stop.

After determining that the suspect, a Melissa man, was intoxicated, they jailed him on a charge of driving while intoxicated 2nd offense. Bail was set at a total of $2,500 payable with a surety bond and with conditions set. He posted that for his release later the same day.

Arrests — About 3 a.m. Jan. 22, Officers were sent to the area of U.S. 75 and County Line Road on a welfare concern. There they found two people — a woman from Grand Prairie and a Farmers Branch man, both of whom were then discovered to have been intoxicated and in a public place.

Both suspects went to Grayson County Jail on charges of public intoxication. Bail was set at $277 cash fine for both and both paid that and were released later the same day.

Arrest — The fifth arrest was that of a Princeton man, according to Grayson County Jail records, who was incarcerated on a DWI charge on Jan. 22. He posted bail of $2,500 in surety bonds for his release.

Calls for service —  Calls for service this week included many reckless driver calls, which police checked out; traffic hazards on U.S. 75; disturbances; animal complaints; and other welfare concerns.
