The Dustin Perkins Band

By Mary Jane Farmer, Scene In Town

The  Dustin Perkins Band captured the crowd at Hank’s Texas Grill in McKinney Saturday night in a two-hour set packed with music felt by the brain and  heard by the heart, the band’s swaggering style keeping everyone pulled in all the while.

Dustin Perkins Band consists of Dustin on rhythm guitar and lead vocals, Colton Gilbreath on lead guitar, harmonies, and occasional lead vocals, Jason “Fuzzy” Smith on bass guitar and harmonies, and Nathan Brown on drums. It’s been together about 8 months, and building in busy on a weekly basis.  There will be more on this band and its future early next week.

Prior to these people getting together as a band, Dustin  found a Zane Williams new song on YouTube, before it was released on CD, called “The Right Place.” He learned the song from that YouTube version he’d heard.

Then, he met and warmed up for Zane at an acoustic night at Main Street Liquid Company in Richardson. As that night’s music came to a close, KHYI radio personality Brett Dillon, who had never heard Dustin before, answered the singer’s question, “How did I do?” by answering him, roughly quoted here, “You need a band and a CD. When you get those you will be on your way.” Dustin had both within six weeks.

Saturday night, Zane was in the audience at Hank’s. At Dustin’s request, Zane joined the band on stage to sing “The Right Place,” one of the few cover songs Dustin and the band perform. (By the way, he also kicks it on the Brandon Jenkins’ song,  “Finger On The Trigger,” a song done by many but not so well as Dustin and Brandon do it. I would love to see Brandon sitting in with the band on that song!)

The band also treated its audience to two new songs, one of which was just finished last week.

Stay tuned for further developments on this amazing group.
